An Algal Discovery

We had our last field day to collect sediment cores at Barn Island! It was a huge accomplishment. On top of that, we found some really beautiful and interesting circumstances at Barn Island. I still find it strange what I am starting to think is beautiful, but there are a lot of pools at Barn Island and many of them were filled with very brightly colored bacteria:

It was pretty stunning and I later found out that the bright pink is a sulfur reducing bacteria, the brown is an algae, and the bright yellow might be some kind of bacteria connected with sulfur, but I’m not sure. I really like the idea of trying to figure out what this means for the marsh.
